How to save petrol

The SUVival Challenge is not about speed. The first car to arrive does not automatically get first prize.

Instead, top scorers are assessed how well they do at game stations and how many correct answers to puzzles they submit.

So, don't floor that accelerator pedal, because you'll just be wasting petrol.

Here are some tips from SPC on how to conserve fuel.

Check tyre pressure. Under-inflated tyres create more resistance and friction with the road surface, so more fuel is burnt to move the car.

Always top up to full tank at the petrol station. This reduces corrosion in the petrol tank.

Condensation can form on the inner side of the fuel tank that is not submerged in fuel.

Replace dirty air filters. Air filters that are clogged with dust, dirt and bugs affect air circulation and create a situation where too much fuel is burnt for the amount of air. This not only wastes fuel, it also causes a loss of power to the engine.

Make sure your engine oil is not too thick. The thicker it is, the poorer the fuel consumption. Rely on your car manufacturer's instructions.
