Contractor hurt in expressway crash with lorry

KUALA LUMPUR: A contractor was seriously injured when his luxury multi-purpose vehicle collided with a lorry that had cut into his lane on the Besraya Expressway in Sungai Besi at 3pm yesterday.

Chah Chee Weng, 38, was warded at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital (HUKM) with head injuries while his wife, Kho Mooi Yoong, received outpatient treatment.

Chah was pinned to the driver's seat of the couple's Toyota Alphard, and despite the best efforts of several motorists, firemen had to be called in to free him.

Chah and Khoo were heading to the city from Serdang when the driver of the lorry lost control and rammed into their Alphard near Kampung Malaysia Tambahan.

A witness, who declined to be identified, said the lorry was not speeding.

He said the lorry hit the road divider before crashing into Chah's vehicle.

"When I stopped to help, the Alphard's driver was still alive but was in shock and could not speak, while his wife, who sustained minor cuts on her hands, was at his side, crying for help."

He said the lorry driver, in his 50s, suffered minor cuts on the forehead while his assistant, in his 20s, was unhurt.

He said several motorists tried to pull Chah's door open, but their efforts proved futile. However, within minutes a police patrol car turned up.

"The police called in an ambulance and firemen, which arrived promptly. Firemen then cut open the door to get him out safely."

Firemen took about 20 minutes to free Chah as his feet were pinned down.

City traffic police deputy chief Deputy Superintendent Ng Fook Long said Chah was in stable condition at HUKM.

He said police would be recording statements from the lorry driver and his assistant.
