Are motorcyclists second-class 'citizens'?

MOTORCYCLISTS are a disadvantaged lot in Singapore.

If they are heading to a shopping mall, they have to find out beforehand whether the carpark allows for motorcycle parking. City Square Mall, for example, has a no motorbikes policy.

If they head to Sentosa either to indulge themselves in the casino or theme park that's going to open soon, they'll have to take a cab or enter by public transport because Sentosa does not allow motorcycles on the island (find out why).

Fellow road-users treat them in the same manner as well - by thoughtlessly impinging upon the motorcyclists' parking lots whenever there's a lack of parking space.

'I don't think they'll mind if I take these motorcycle lots. I'm in a hurry,' might be the thoughts of these thoughtless drivers.

Or they might think, 'I pay more road tax so I deserve it'. Ugly, but nonetheless still a typical Singaporean mindset that you'll hear everywhere.

They could reason with their consciences until, to put it bluntly, the cows come home, but it would still be wrong.

They are, after all, fellow road users. The least we could do is to respect them as such.
