Giving a clean and new face to cars

By Ho Lian-Yi

It may be many a man's fantasy to have a bevy of beauties wash his car.

And one man had it fulfilled yesterday, when 17 of The New Paper's New Face 2008 finalists got down and soapy at the Subaru Sunday Car Wash.

Twenty cars - 10 Subaru, 10 non-Subaru - were given a free wash at Zouk, where the promotional car-wash event was held to coincide with Zouk Flea n Easy, a flea market event held on the club's premises.

The car wash was first-come-first-served, and two vehicles got the special New Paper New Face treatment.

Mr Alfian Abdullah, 28, a flight steward, was beaming as he snapped photos of the girls hosing down his Suzuki Swift.

He said he was looking for a free car wash, and the girls doing it was a bonus.

Crash course

"Can I be the car?" he asked jokingly, moving away from his girlfriend so she wouldn't hear him.

Miss Sharon Guan, 26, a civil servant who was driving her boyfriend's car, said: "I just know that my boyfriend will be very happy, that's all.

"A privilege, I guess."

Her boyfriend was not with her.

Most of the New Face girls had no experience cleaning cars, and they had a quick crash course on the basics from the contractors who were hired to do the job.

New Face winner Shahirah Price, 18, was not feeling well and had to leave soon after she helped to announce that free car washes were available.

Nicole Hug, 20, who is Swiss-born, said she had only washed a car once before, when she was about 11.

"It was in Switzerland. I was washing my parents' car for money," she said.

Once they got the basics down (point hose, rub foam), they got to work, giggling as they did.

The two contractors looking on were tickled by the sight of 10 girls scrubbing one hood.

One of them started laughing, and asked: "How many people do you need to wash one car?"

It seemed the girls were not too keen on getting their hands dirtied.

Madeline Neo, 17, was the first to yell: "I want to hold the hose!"

After a while though, the girls warmed to their roles. Their enthusiasm was summed up by Taryn Fonseca, 19,whosaid: "Yeah! Let's go get wet!"

Sara Chan, 17, winner of the Subaru Miss Vivacious title, is a towering 1.82m, and was given the task of cleaning the car roofs.

It was two firsts for her - she had never washed cars orbeen to Zouk before.

"It's very fun. Seeing it go from being a dirty car to a clean one; there's a sense of achievement," she said.

It was also the first time washing cars for Lydia Norman,21.

She said: "It's fun playing in the foam. It's a cheap thrill. We also got to see all the other girls together again. We don't get to see each other a lot."
