Car tried to run policeman over, shot fired

By Hedy Khoo

AN anti-drink driving operation on Saturday morning turned into high drama when a police officer fired a shot at a vehicle which allegedly tried to run him over.

The incident took place at the junction of Neil Road and Kreta Ayer Road at 1.15am yesterday.

Police officers had setup road blocks in the vicinity to ring-fence the entertainment outlets in the area.

To avoid being stopped at a road block, one man allegedly drove against the traffic flow.

He allegedly even tried to run over an officer, a police spokesman said.

"As his life was in imminent danger, the officer drew his revolver to fire a single shot at the front wheel of the car in an attempt to neutralise the threat," the spokesman said.

No one was injured and the public was not endangered at any point in time, he said.

A48-year-old man was arrested and later charged in court. He was allegedly drunk and driving without a licence.

The police declined to release his name. The ring-fencing operation lasted 2 1/2 hours. Of the 119 drivers who were administered the breathalyser test, 26 failed and were arrested. One of them was a woman. They were aged between 26 and 55 years old.

Sixteen out of the 26 arrested were in their 20s and 30s. This brings the total number of drink drivers caught so far this year to 1,350.

Drink drivers, upon conviction, will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months. In addition, first-time offenders can be fined between $1,000and $5,000 or jailed up to six months or both. Repeat offenders can be fined up to $30,000 with a mandatory jail term of up to three years.
