MY DAUGHTER'S 1.4-litre car is beginning to use more fuel than normal - 1 litre of petrol only covers about 6 to 7km. What could be the problem? Can too much engine oil be a reason?
A CAR can consume more fuel if it is not serviced regularly. Check the air filter and look at the element inside. If it is dirty or covered with oil, it could increase your car's fuel consumption.
If you have severely overfilled the engine with oil, high pressure may develop in the crankcase and you can get a contaminated air filter. Oil leakage may also occur. This could make the engine work harder and thus increase your car's fuel consumption.
If everything is fine, your problem could be due to brake binding. Check by pushing your car gently on level ground with its handbrake off. If your car does not move easily, your brakes are binding. Repeat the test on all wheels by rolling them after jacking the car up. This way, you can identify the problematic brake/s.
If neither of these checks show where the problem lies, take your car to a competent workshop. Unusually high fuel consumption could damage the car's catalytic converter, which will need hefty repairs.
