A tyre shop told me that my car is fitted with run-flat tyres. What does that mean?
Run-flat tyres have reinforced sidewalls or additional internal structures to provide partial support to the tyre in a deflated condition.
This allows the car to be driven even when one or more tyres are punctured.
In fact, the ride quality in such a situation may not differ much, so the driver is alerted to the deflation by the car's tyre pressure monitoring system (fitted to cars with run-flats).
Deflated run-flats should be capable of travelling for at least 80km, at speeds up to 80kmh.
However, they should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
In some cases, the tyre pressure monitoring system will need to be reset after the fitting of a new tyre.
