How often should the automatic transmission fluid be changed? How do I know when I need to change the fluid?
It depends on the make and model of the car, the type of fluid used and the climate conditions.
Under normal operating conditions here, a change is recommended every 40,000 to 60,000km, or every two to three years, whichever comes first.
Contaminated auto transmission fluid can damage the gearbox and also cause problems such as slow response to gear shift, loss of power and premature wear.
It is advisable to service your car and have the oils and fluids changed in accordance with the local car distributor's recommended intervals.
New auto transmission fluid is usually red in colour. Over time and use, it becomes brownish. It should not be black or have a burnt smell.
