Demand grows for pricey performance motorbikes

By Mark Soh

Start your engines, gentlemen.

But only those lucky enough to have snapped up some of the latest performance motorcycles here.

Demand is so hot for some models, they are sold even before hitting our shores.

At more than $30,000, they are not cheap.

But sales of these high-performance bikes seem to have picked up over the last few years. Makers of performance bikes, such as BMW and Ducati, have seen sales more than double over the last three years.

But the companies that sell mostly bread-and-butter models, like Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki, have seen a decline in sales over the same period. (See chart below.)

The latest performance bike to hit town has been dubbed the world's fastest street-legal motorcycle.

The 2012 model of the Kawasaki 1400cc Ninja ZX-14R is expected here by the middle of the month.

"This model is the king of all sport bikes, and we aren't saying this lightly," said Mr Michael Dass, the managing director of Evershine Auto, sole distributor of Kawasaki motorbikes.
