A 9,600KM long-distance love affair is never going to be easy, especially if
your boyfriend is the hottest flavour in Formula One.
But Jodia Ma is not giving up on her romance with Lewis Hamilton.
"I think the world of him," she told The Sunday Mirror.
For the first time today, the 22-year-old from Hong Kong will be cheering the
McLaren rookie at race side for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
"I am just so proud of Lewis and always will be. He's a lovely, amazing guy and
incredibly talented," she said.
The two met when they were at Cambridge Arts & Science college. But it has
not been easy. As Hamilton concentrated on his burgeoning career, their
relationship started to deteriorate.
In January, she decided to leave the United Kingdom and go back to Hong Kong,
and begin a new life.
"She decided there wasn't a lot of point waiting about for him because he
wasn't going to have much time to see her," a friend of Ma's told The Sunday
Mirror. "She was thinking about going to Beijing to learn Mandarin and get back
to her roots."
Still, Hamilton took time off to visit her in Hong Kong in March, and they went
to Bali together. But, as the season went into full swing, he again had no time
for her.
"You could tell they were deeply in love when she first came to work here,"
said a colleague. "But, all of a sudden, she didn't want to talk about him at
all.
"We knew she wasn't seeing him or going to any of the races. To be honest, we
weren't sure whether it was all over. It was a touchy subject with her."
Ma works as a guest reception manager at Zuma, one of Hong Kong's most
fashionable restaurants.
Speculation that the couple had ended their four-year affair increased when she
did not show up for the British Grand Prix, his home race.
Hamilton said he had been "too busy" to see Ma.
Then came the 280kmh crash during qualifying at Nuerburgring three weeks ago.
Hamilton crumpled to the ground after getting out of the car, but was later
passed fit to race.
It was a shocking experience for Ma. A few days later, she was in London with
him to celebrate her birthday, and they went for a short break in Finland.
Now she is set to support him at the Hungarian GP, proving that the couple are
still going strong.
