The New Paper
To Laos or bust

STORM RIDERS

Their BMW motorcycles are known to take the punishment on faraway adventures.

These Storm Riders will find out whether man or machine will conquer the terrain in Laos.

Eleven of them will be heading to Laos, where the road less travelled is often not a road at all.

Sponsored by Singha Beer, the riders will face not only rocky roads but also river crossings.

And in anticipation of stormy conditions, they're making use of the calm to practise.

In the last few weeks they've been bush-whacking in Malaysia's oil palm plantations.

Falling off their motorcycles is part and parcel of overcoming the treacherous terrain as the team, headed by Alex Quah, prepares for the mid January ride.

Trek the team's journey with The New Paper next month.

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE

No amount of money will get you into this fraternity.

You need brains to be part of the NUS Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) team.

They're mechanical engineering students, headed by professor Seah Kar Heng, who live, sleep and dream of building the ultimate race car using motorcycle engines.

But if you want some advice on engine building from real engineers, why not buy the "prof" and his boys coffee?

They'll tell you what works and what will blow your engine.

Each year, the NUS team competes against as many as 100 international universities in the US.

We've tested one of their earlier prototypes and all we can say is that it was light, fast and can drift as fast as you can say "powerslide".

The 2008 race car is fitted with a Honda CBR600F4i engine.

The team has built its own oil cooling system, engine control unit and data acquisition system, among other in-house parts.
