MRT system designed to transport large numbers promptly and efficiently

I REFER to the letters, "Crowded trains: Bunching not the problem" by Ms Hannah Ruth Chia (Nov 25), and "No thanks: Why commuter hasn't taken a train in two years" by Mr Camillus Yap (Online Forum, Nov 22).

Both writers commented that trains are too crowded for them to enjoy a comfortable journey.

While it is our aim to provide passengers with comfortable train rides while optimising train service frequencies, the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is designed to transport large numbers of passengers promptly and efficiently.

To balance this against commuters' needs, SMRT has introduced four train service enhancements this year, adding about 900 extra train trips for the convenience of passengers. Train trips have been added, where possible, so average train loads are not more than 1,200 passengers, which is below the Land Transport Authority's operating standard of 1,600 passengers. Having the additional services means that trains arrive within five minutes or less if passenger loads are between 1,000 and 1,200 people. Currently, we are already operating at our optimal frequency during the peak period. Outside peak hours, we continue to proactively monitor train loads and adjust train frequencies where appropriate.

There are plans for an additional station platform and train alignment at Jurong East MRT Station. When the project is completed in 2012, together with additional trains that will be provided by the Land Transport Authority, more train trips can be added during peak periods to enhance train service frequencies to reduce waiting times for passengers.

We thank the writers for their feedback.
