While motorcycle clubs have been around for a long time, they are now getting more focused.
It's no longer a motley crew of different types of motorcycles at bike meets. Nowadays, you're more likely to see sport bikers or dirt bikers mixing only with their own kind.
It strengthens the bond, they say.
Nevertheless, being part of a larger group of like-minded bikers can enhance your riding skills and knowledge.
But not all clubs readily accept non members.
Members to some clubs are on an 'invitation' basis.
Sometimes you need to own the 'preferred' motorbike before you can gain entry.
If you're a newbie, getting involved in a motorcycle club would be a good start to your motorcycling experience.
A motorcycle club is a good place to source for rare parts and get discounts.
Somebody in the club is bound to know where to get that special deal or the best route to that faraway destination.
And other club members might just be kind enough to reveal a maintenance tip or teach you how to carve a corner like a pro.
Here are some clubs to check out:
Aj Scooters of Singapore
Besides preserving the scooter culture, this club is also into charity. It raises money for the elderly and underprivileged.
And if you want to know where to get parts for your scooter or what it's like owning a classic Vespa or Lambretta, call club representative Aziz Omar on 9274 7181 or visit www.ajscooters.com
Singapore Motor Sports Association (SMSA)
If speed is your need, whether on a motocross bike or a sportsbike, call SMSA.
It will teach you how to race like MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi at its riding clinics.
Whether you make it to the podium depends on how daring you are with the throttle.
The club's activities are laced with adrenaline, but you are required to adhere to track and safety rules.
Call SMSA on 6227 7889 or visit www.smsa.org.sg
The MagBikers
This club loves touring. Trips to Malaysia are common, with as many as 150 bikes participating in each trip. All motorcycle types are welcome.
In February, The MagBikers cruised a 250km stretch of road in Batam escorted by local police.
Next month, the group is planning a 'durian' ride to Ayer Hitam in Johor Baru. No prizes for guessing what is on the itinerary at Ayer Hitam.
On homeground, The MagBikers love to 'talk story' at a favourite coffeeshop hang-out in Tanjong Katong.
Contact club representative Meng Tan on 8139 8013.
Motorcycle Safety and Sports Club (MSSC)
This club loves to play dirty, and is active in promoting the sport of enduro and motocross racing.
Children may also join the club activities under watchful eyes of riding instructors. Contact club president Ong Kim Hua on 67833063.
Harley Owners' Group (Hog)
It's hog heaven when you mix with this bunch of Harley-Davidson motorcycle owners.
They love to ride and play hard. But Hog is also actively involved in charity work aside from polishing the chrome on their expensive Harleys.
If you want to know about Harley customisation, just buy any one of the Hog members a drink. They're more than happy to share their stories.
Call the Harley dealership on 64750123 or visit www.singaporehog.com.
