Raikkonen promises to help Massa take the title

LONDON (Reuters) - Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen promised on Wednesday to do everything possible to help team mate Felipe Massa replace him as Formula One champion now that his own title hopes have disappeared.

"Shanghai is a very demanding track and I really like it," the Finn told the Ferrari website (www.ferrariworld.com) ahead of Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix, the penultimate race of the season.

"Our goal is a one-two win. I'll give it all to help Felipe and the team to gain the results we want."

Brazilian Massa is five points behind McLaren's Lewis Hamilton in the standings with 20 points still to be won.

Ferrari are ahead in the constructors' championship, with 142 points to McLaren's 135.

Raikkonen won in China last year before sealing the title by a single point, thanks to Massa's help, with a Ferrari one-two in the season-ending race in Brazil.

The Finn's slim hope of defending his title disappeared in Japan last weekend when he finished third, leaving him 21 points adrift of Hamilton.

The former McLaren driver blamed Hamilton, who started on pole position at Fuji, and the Briton's team mate Heikki Kovalainen for first corner mayhem that effectively ended his chances of winning.

"I have no idea what the drivers behind me were thinking," said the Finn, who was ahead of Hamilton into the first corner but forced to run wide when the 23-year-old ducked inside and braked late.

"They braked so late that it was impossible to avoid the following chaos. It was an inexplicable mistake by the two McLaren cars, who actually expelled me from the fight for victory."
