Get ready to see more bargain-price China-made cars on the road. Entrepreneur Peter Kwee has secured two more Chinese vehicle brands, just over two months after launching Geely.
The next-in-line marques are Dongfeng and Soyat. The Dongfeng models will include a seven-seater expected to be priced around $45,000 - making it the cheapest MPV in town.
Dongfeng will also have two goods vans going for less than $20,000. Soyat's models will include a seven-seater sports utility vehicle, expected to be around $60,000. In addition, there is a panel van that looks like the Volkswagen Caddy, also to be priced below $20,000.
These vehicles are also the cheapest in their categories.
Mr Kwee, who relinquished his Renault franchise last September after 25 years, said: "With Renault, we started making money only after seven years. I think with the Chinese cars, we can make money from the first. It has all to do with volume."
Why Chinese makes and why so many so soon?
Mr Kwee said: "Chinese brands are coming up very fast. None of the brands is in competition. For instance, Geely does not have commercial vehicles."
Dongfeng and Soyat vehicles will be displayed in Mr Kwee's Group Exklusiv showroom in the Ubi area, next to Geely.
These brands aside, Mr Kwee is negotiating for a fourth Chinese marque, and possibly more, in the months ahead.
Group Exklusiv has hired industry veteran Nicholas Ng to be general manager of the fast-growing business. Mr Ng was previously with Mercedes dealer Cycle & Carriage and Audi agent Premium Automobiles.
The invasion of Chinese car brands started in July last year, when the Lian Fong group brought in Chery.
Despite criticisms about build quality, buyers seemed to warm to the newcomers.
They snapped up about 300 Cherys, and 200 others have booked Geelys. Many are first-time car buyers.
Mr Justin Tan, 28, a commercial executive with an airline, said his $39,000 Geely 'is a bargain'.
"Of course, you can't compare it with other more established makes, but for basic commuting, it's good."
Immigration officer Nawawi Salam, 47, said he bought a Geely because "it's cheap and it has low fuel consumption".
ALL ABOUT VOLUME
