Stamford Tyres has spent $300,000 to open its first no-frills outlet in Tampines Industrial Park.

The mainboard-listed company is Singapore's biggest distributor and retailer of tyres and alloy wheels. With the latest addition, its retail chain now consists of seven MegaMarts and four Tyre Express marts.

Unlike the other MegaMarts with their usual mix of tyres, alloy rims and automotive accessories, the Tampines outlet will be more basic in nature. It will offer only tyres, wheels and servicing for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

'Stamford Tyres decided to go no-frills due to the location of the mart in the Tampines Industrial Park,' explains Jeffrey Cheong, Stamford's senior manager for sales and marketing.

He says that in the area Stamford is located, most of its competitors are offering basic tyre and wheel services, as well as reasonable servicing packages.

'So to be competitive, we went no-frills and kicked off the operations by selling our core products first,' says Mr Cheong. 'However, we may start selling accessories at a later date.'

These auto accessories will include exhaust systems, brake kits and other products already seen in the chain's other outlets. So far, only spare parts like air filters and light bulbs are available there.

The Tampines mart, at Blk 9006, Tampines Street 93, is about 3,500 square feet in size. It has one alignment bay, two high lifters for oil change and servicing, and two low lifters for tyre and wheel service.

'Pricing will be affordable since we are located in the Tampines heartland. We are hoping to target the Tampines estate itself, as well as Pasir Ris, Simei and Bedok.'
