SYRACUSE, New York (AP) -- A man convicted of driving drunk for a seventh time since 1982 was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison Wednesday by a judge who criticized his "lethal disregard" for others.
Ronald Daggett, 43, was convicted in February of riding a motorcycle drunk and impaired by drugs after he nearly collided with a minivan in 2005.
Daggett's first such conviction came in 1982 when he was involved in an alcohol-related crash that killed a man. Daggett pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and misdemeanor DWI and was sentenced to one year in the county jail.
"It is inconceivable to me that someone involved in a drunk driving fatality could go out and pick up six more drunk driving convictions over the next two decades," Judge Joseph Fahey said.
Daggett also was convicted of driving drunk in 1987, 1991 and 1997.
After his fifth DWI conviction in 1999, a judge warned Daggett he could face a life sentence if he got into trouble again and sent Daggett to prison for two to six years. Daggett was released in July 2003 after serving four years.
The judge noted Daggett's arrest in the latest case came just 44 days after he was released from parole supervision.
