The New Paper

Call it a crash-and-confused run.

A lorry collided with a car along Sembawang Road on Saturday evening, then went on a crazy path of illegal U-turns over about 2km in a bid to escape.

And, in his panic to get away, the lorry driver allegedly dumped his load of more than 10 foreign workers by the roadside.

The lorry, which had crashed into a Toyota Corolla, then sped off, leaving the driver of the Toyota hopping mad and the foreign workers confused.

The owner of the Toyota, Mr Sng Kng Yeow, 48, told Lianhe Wanbao that he was driving home from work at about 6pm when the lorry rear-ended him at a traffic junction along Sembawang Road near the Khatib camp.

The construction manager had stopped at a red light, but the lorry travelling behind him, could not stop in time.

Mr Sng said: "The lorry crashed into the back of my car, giving me a big shock."

Seeing the lorry turning to a nearby bus-stop, Mr Sng thought the lorry was going to stop so that they could assess the damages.

Instead, the lorry cut in front of Mr Sng's car, and sped off.

ILLEGAL U-TURNS

Said Mr Sng: "The driver drove very fast, and made a sharp U-turn in front. He even drove against the traffic.

"I gave chase, but he went so fast that I lost him."

He pursued the lorry all the way to Yishun Ave 1, and was surprised to see the group of foreign workers standing by the roadside looking lost, with the lorry nowhere in sight.

Said Mr Sng: "Some of them were standing, some of them were sitting. But they were all looking in the same direction, probably where the lorry had gone off.

"I thought I had lost the lorry but, when I drove on, I saw it ahead of me. The driver probably saw my car from the rearview mirror, and he sped off again."

According to Mr Sng, the lorry driver made another illegal U-turn at the next traffic junction. It even mounted the kerb.

Unwilling to flout traffic rules, Mr Sng decided to give up the chase and made a report at a nearby police post instead.

He managed to note down the lorry's license plate number.

The back of Mr Sng's car was dented from the impact of the collision, and he was unable to close his car boot.

Mr Sng told Lianhe Wanbao that he was glad his teenage daughters was not in the car at that time, as they usually sat in the back seat.

Mr Sng claimed that it was his first accident in more than 10 years.

It is not known what happened to the group of foreign workers.

Witnesses can call the police on 18005471818.
