Last of five charges against actor dropped

Mediacorp actor Christopher Lee, who is currently serving out a six-week jail term for traffic offence, could be released from prison this weekend after the last of five charges against him was dropped yesterday.

Originally meant as a pre-trial conference, yesterday's hearing turned into a court hearing instead. The prosecution agreed to drop the last charge against Lee, 35, for failing to stop after an accident, giving him a stern warning instead.

District Judge Terence Chua allowed this fifth charge to be dropped, which amounts to an acquittal, according to The Straits Times today.

Lee began serving his six-week sentence on May 28 at Queenstown Remand Prison. As a prisoner gets one-third remission for good behaviour, Lee could be released from jail this weekend if he is granted remission.

The actor had driven off after his car collided with a motorcycle at the junction of Serangoon Road and Kitchener Road on Oct 8 last year. He failed a breathalyser test when the police caught up with him.

The motorcyclists received outpatient treatment, but his pillion rider had a toe amputated.

The actor pleaded guilty to four charges before a district judge last month. He was fined $3,000 for drink driving, $800 for inconsiderate driving, and $700 for removing his car from the scene. He was also jailed four weeks for failing to provide assistance in a serious traffic accident and banned from driving for three years.

However, after a successful appeal by the prosecution, Lee's drink-driving fine was substituted with a consecutive two-week jail term.

One of Lee's lawyers, senior associate Derek Kang, said they had written to the prosecution on Wednesday to ask for a withdrawal of the last charge, which the prosection agreed to do so.

Lee nodded his head in relief yesterday when the judge agreed to drop the charge. .
