SILVERSTONE, England (AP) -- The BMW-Sauber drivers are in a mini-battle to decide the best of the rest behind Ferrari and McLaren.
Robert Kubica finished fourth at the British Grand Prix on Sunday after also placing fourth at last week's French GP. Nick Heidfeld was sixth at Silverstone and fifth at Magny Cours.
"Those two leading teams are not running away from us and we had the Renaults under control again," Heidfeld said Sunday.
With 33 points, Heidfeld already has five more than last year with eight races to go to be fifth in the standings.
Kubica is sixth with 22 points, even missing one race -- the United States GP -- following an horrific accident at the Canadian GP on June 10 when his car somersaulted across the track after hitting a wall.
"The thing is that all the time the car is improving," Kubica said. "I am no different from before the accident, but our car is improving all the time."
Kubica had no broken bones and even showed up at the United States GP with medical advice stating he could drive. However, FIA, the international governing body of racing, ruled him out.
Kubica and Heidfeld both had problems with Ferrari driver Felipe Massa at the British GP.
"I found myself in front of Felipe Massa, but this race was not as easy as in Magny Cours as I had to keep him behind for the last 13 laps," Kubica said. "He had a harder job than me as I just had to control the situation, not push too much, not make any mistakes, and I was pretty sure I would hold him."
At one stage, Heidfeld was fifth and in front of Massa but could not hold that advantage.
"I was aware that Felipe Massa would have his second pit stop later than mine, but the advantage with a low-fuel load is quite big here, so I could not stay in front of him," Heidfeld said.
Heidfeld started the season with three consecutive fourth-place finishes and even placed second in Canada to break up the Ferrari-McLaren domination.
