Markus Winkelhock to make Formula 1 debut for Spyker at European Grand Prix

SILVERSTONE, England (AP) -- Spyker reserve driver Markus Winkelhock will make his Formula One debut at Sunday's European Grand Prix.

The 27-year-old Winkelhock will partner Adrian Sutil, taking the seat that was made vacant when the team fired Christijan Albers last week.

Christian Klien tested for Spyker last week after Honda released him, but the team instead opted to go with the German driver for the race at the Nurburgring circuit on July 22.

Spyker, which fired Albers when one of his personal sponsors failed to come up with promised money, said it had yet to decide who would fill the seat for the rest of the season.

"It's very much a one-off race at the moment as we need some more time to decide who will be Adrian's partner for the rest of the year," team principal and managing director Colin Kolles said.

Winkelhock is the son of late F1 driver Manfred Winkelhock. He has been Spyker's reserve and test driver since January 2006, when the team was called Midland.

"It's a dream come true," Winkelhock said. "I haven't had much time in the car this year, but I'm physically and mentally prepared.

"It's a one-off opportunity at the moment and I will make the most of it."
