Hummer is here

THE Hummer has landed, just months after production of the right-hand-drive H3 started in South Africa.
Parallel importer Cyber Cars, located at Holiday Inn Atrium in Outram Road, has already garnered a handful of orders for the 3.7-litre masculine 4x4, which it is selling for $235,000 with COE.

The debut of this American icon, which gained worldwide fame as the Terminator's car, was anticipated by Life!, when it learnt more than a year ago that General Motors had been mulling over its introduction here.

GM had in fact held casual discussions with prospective dealers, including Mr Melvin Goh, who sells Lamborghini, Lotus and Alfa Romeo here.

But even before GM decided one way or the other, the car is here.

Right-hand-drive production of the Hummer 3 - a more road-friendly model of the military-derived marque - started in the second quarter in the South African town of Port Elizabeth.

Cyber Cars business consultant Sean Kang told Life! his company was the first to bring in the car, but he expects others to follow suit.

He said the first cars should be on the road in about two months' time.

Cyber Cars' H3, priced slightly less than a BMW X5 3.0, is decently equipped. Cruise control, traction control, eight-way electrically adjustable driver's seat and sunroof are part of the package.

Its 242hp inline-5 engine is mated to a four-speed autobox with overdrive. Standing 1.9m tall, it rides on 16-inch wheels with high-profile all-terrain tyres.

The H3 will be sent for Land Transport Authority approval soon.
