Latest statistics from the Land Transport Authority show that public transport ridership has hit an all-time high.
For the financial year ended March, there was an average 4.36 million trips made a day.
The previous high was recorded in the 2000/2001 financial year.
The figures do not include trips on private buses, which are estimated to be around 1 million a day.
From April to June this year, published figures from SBS Transit and SMRT showed there were 4.44 million rides made a day, and these are expected to cross 4.5 million.
Observers told straitstimes.com that the rise in public transport users tallies with the strong growth in Singapore's population, which hit 4.68 million people this year.
Citigroup Singapore strategist Lim Jit Soon said: "I would not put it to more people using public transport... there are now simply more people."
However, the average daily ridership in June was 6.3 per cent more than in June last year, growing faster than the 4.4 per cent population growth rate.
Another possible factor for the rise is reportedly that more car owners are switching to public transport.
