AMERICAN oil company Chevron raised pump prices of its Caltex petrol and diesel by five cents a litre on Monday - the sixth increase since July and the second in about a fortnight.
The others - Shell, ExxonMobil and Singapore Petroleum - are likely to do likewise in the coming days.
Chevron's move brings its pump prices to record levels.
Before discount, the price of Caltex Silver 95 is now $1.886 a litre, Caltex Gold 98 $1.96 a litre, Caltex Platinum $2.126 a litre and diesel $1.403 a litre.
Station discount now stands at 5 per cent.
For some perspective, the price of diesel today is equivalent to what premium petrol cost just four years ago.
Back then, diesel cost around 67 cents a litre.
The latest increase comes on the back of crude oil hovering at record levels.
Last Friday, New York light sweet crude reached US$90.07 per barrel while London Brent hit US$84.88 a day earlier.
The pump price spiral is expected to have as much impact on individual motorists as public transport operators and taxi-drivers.
