M'sian official in crash while on mercy mission

KUANTAN: Four people, including Women, Family and Community Development Ministry parliamentary secretary Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, were injured when the car they were in skidded and crashed into a road divider on the East Coast Highway yesterday. All were reported to be in stable condition at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital following the 12.30pm incident at Km196.7 of the highway near Gambang.

The others injured were Chew's private secretary Chua Fong Leng, 40, MCA Crisis Relief Squad member Steven Ho, 33, and driver Mohd Yusri Yusof, 35.

The Proton Perdana they were in skidded during a downpour, crashed into the road divider, spun several times and turned turtle on the opposite lane.

They were heading towards Sungai Lembing to provide assistance to flood victims.

Ho said he was sitting in the back seat with Chew when the accident took place.

"Thank God there were no other vehicles on the other lane. I cannot imagine what would have happened if there were," he said before undergoing an X-ray.

Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil visited all the victims who were at the emergency ward and was relieved to learn that all of them were in stable condition.

"The doctors have assured me they will provide them with the best treatment. Chew is still traumatised by the accident," she said.
