Benedict Goh wants to be crusader against drink driving
FRESH out of jail, former TV actor and host Benedict Goh is auditioning for a new role - as a crusader against drink driving.
He said on Wednesday he wants to use his own drink driving experience, which landed him in jail earlier this month, to spread the anti-drink driving message, especially to teenagers.
Describing his time in prison as a 'wake-up call', he said he wants to stress that ending up behind bars for drink-driving cases - including fatal ones - is a big mistake for young people with a lifetime ahead of them.
A spate of drink-driving cases involving youths spurred him to speak up.
'I think when you're young and impressionable, you tend to be a rebel,' Mr Goh, 37, said.
'But a thoughtless act can land you in a lot of trouble... it's worse, if under the effect of drugs and or alcohol.'
His first step, Mr Goh said, will be to approach polytechnics and universities and offer to give talks to students.
The idea came to him while he was serving out a three-week sentence in Queenstown Remand Prison for a drink-driving offence he committed on Feb 10 this year. He was found to have 56mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath then.
The legal limit is 35mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.
Mr Goh was also banned from driving for four years and fined $800 for not keeping a proper lookout, which led to his car hitting a stationary vehicle along the Ayer Rajah Expressway at about 3.30am that night.
Two other charges were taken into consideration.
