Fastlane: New Altis will be bigger

A NEW model of Toyota's top-selling Corolla Altis will be available from February. Longer, broader but more low-slung, the car, despite having the same wheelbase as the current model, will boast more interior room.

The new Altis will have the same 1.6 and 1.8-litre engines, but its gear ratios are altered to maintain responsiveness.

Inside, there will a flat rear floor, which means three occupants can sit more comfortably. Insulation has been improved, and the car is expected to run more quietly - a trait befitting its new executive car-like dimensions and styling. The automatic transmission has an open shift gate, like what is found in bigger cars.

The car will be priced below $70,000; and Toyota distributor Borneo Motors will offer those who book early a discount. Current customers will also get an additional discount.
