POLICE have devised a new system to net Mat Rempit. Under the rolling roadblock system, Mat Rempit making a U-turn after encountering a roadblock will not escape as policemen would be stationed along the route to block them.
In short, the motorcyclists will find themselves trapped between two groups of policemen.
It is learnt that the system would be used in strategic areas.
First, plainclothes cops jot down the registration number of motorcycles and inform their counterparts waiting at the roadblock.
When Mat Rempit make a U-turn, another team of policemen will emerge from a junction and block the road with their vehicles.
The system was first used near the Pantai Lido and Pandan on Oct 28. Police checked 106 motorcyclists and arrested six of them.
Johor Baru (south) traffic and public order chief Assistant Superintendent Ooi Kok Seng said the two operations were held simultaneously.
"Roadblocks will be set up regularly to check the Mat Rempit menace. We want to build a new image of a city free of Mat Rempit," he said.
The operations were assisted by officers from the state Religious Affairs Department and Rela.
Of the six arrested at Pantai Lido, one was found riding a stolen motorcycle, one detained for dangerous riding while the rest tested positive for drugs.
Police also issued summonses to 61 motorists for various offences.
