THE driver involved in the late-night car accident on Tuesday that killed two polytechnic students was arrested by the police yesterday.
Republic Polytechnic student Phua Jia Chee, 19, has since been released on bail. The police are investigating the case as causing death by a negligent act.
Meanwhile, the other surviving occupant of the car, Mr Tan Han Leng, 20, a second-year Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) student, has been discharged from hospital.
Mr Tan, an engineering informatics student, had undergone minor surgery at the Singapore General Hospital for his injured left hand on Wednesday.
Mr Phua escaped with light injuries.
He had been driving his father's Mitsubishi Lancer at around midnight on Tuesday along Old Upper Thomson Road. The car skidded along a snaking stretch of road that had been part of the defunct Singapore Grand Prix race track.
The vehicle went off the road, plunging about 1m downhill before hitting some trees.
The pair at the back, Mr Tan's classmates at NYP, did not survive.
Mr David Li, 18, suffered head injuries and died on the spot. He was cremated on Wednesday afternoon at the Mandai Crematorium.
Mr Mervin Teo, 19, died at about 1.20am on Wednesday at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He will be cremated today at the Mandai Crematorium.
Mr Teo's 25-year-old brother Melvin said that the two crash survivors had not been at the wake.
He added that this had been a difficult time and the Teo family members were not ready to meet the survivors yet.
The two teens' deaths have left many of their classmates in shock.
Mr Kelvin Ng, 45, who is the programme manager of the engineering informatics group at NYP, said the class had been scheduled to take some common tests this week.
But the tests have been postponed. They will be taken when the students are "more composed".
