PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA: Selangor police have crippled the notorious Bumper Gang that specialises in carjacking of luxury vehicles by faking accidents, with the arrest of six suspects and recovery of four stolen cars.

The gang, said to have been active in the Klang Valley and Selangor since October last year, is believed to have been responsible for at least 25 carjackings and other robberies.

Several others, including a woman, are still at large and police have stepped up their operations to find them.

Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Mazlan Mansor said the gang, usually three of them, cruised around in a car during the early hours of the morning looking for a victim, always someone driving alone.

"They would fake an accident by 'bumping' into the rear of the victim's car, who would usually stop to check the damage.

"Once the victim stopped, two of them would alight and approach him and before the victim realised it, they would have made off with the car," he said.

He said that in most of the cases the suspects wore baseball caps and jackets.

SAC Mazlan said police got their breakthrough when his officers arrested three suspects on Feb 16 and recovered a BMW reported stolen in Shah Alam the same day.

The team also seized a Proton Wira belonging to one of the suspects, three car keys and four handphones belonging to victims.

Follow-up operations led to the arrest of another three men on Feb 19 in an apartment in Subang Jaya. Police also recovered a Honda Civic taken from a victim in Kota Damansara as well as a Honda Accord and Honda CRV reported stolen in Bukit Puchong.

A Proton Wira belonging to one of the suspects that police believe was used in most of the robberies was also seized.

"We are investigating where most of the cars were disposed of and have not ruled out the possibility that they could have been shipped overseas," he added.
