WE REFER to the letter "Smoky exhausts causing pollution" (my paper, April 7).

The National Environment Agency (NEA) takes a serious view on air pollution caused by excessive smoke emission from motor vehicles, and has in place registration and enforcement control measures to address smoky vehicles.

Vehicles that do not pass the stringent exhaust smoke test during mandatory periodic inspection are not allowed to renew their road tax and hence not allowed on the roads.

In addition, NEA officers are deployed daily to various parts of Singapore, as well as the immigration checkpoints, to carry out enforcement operation against smoky vehicles.

Vehicles caught emitting smoke are booked and offered compound fines.

NEA will not hesitate to take enforcement action against drivers with smoky vehicles.

Members of the public can support our enforcement effort by calling 1800-CALL-NEA (1800-2255-632) to report errant motorists.

The vehicle registration number and the date, time and place of the offence should be provided to facilitate our follow- up actions.
