I read with keen interest the latest news that Malaysia is banning foreign-registered vehicles from buying petrol within 50km of its borders.
Although the rule is Malaysia's domestic affair, I share the sentiments of many Singaporean drivers and Johor petrolstation operators, as well as other relevant business owners in the southern state.
I live in Marsiling Drive, just opposite the Johor Straits, and I drive regularly across the Causeway not only to top-up petrol but also to purchase household essentials and to visit my family's kampung in Kulai.
I hope that the latest petrol ban will not stop Singaporeans from travelling to Malaysia for leisure, work or social commitments.
We should not boycott the country as a result, as it will reflect badly on Singaporeans and our country.
I also hope the Malaysian government will look for a "win-win" formula in terms of fuel purchase, so that their citizens, as well as foreigners, would benefit.
At the same time, I would like to urge fellow Singaporean motorists to see this ban from a positive point of view.
It is, perhaps, time for us to give more support to petrol stations in Singapore.
I hope that fuel prices here will eventually fall as demand rises.
