Thu, Jun 05, 2008
The Straits Times

TWO men believed to be involved in at least 200 cases of theft from vehicles island-wide since the middle of last year have been arrested.

Police officers finally tracked down the duo in the vicinity of Geylang Lorong 6 at about 1 pm on Wednesday and nabbed them.

Police also seized 17 cash cards and auto-passes, seven bank books, notebooks, a mobile phone, among other items.

The valuables stolen by the pair are valued at about $20,000.

In most cases, the suspects targeted goods vehicles that were left unattended while the drivers were making their deliveries.

Both men will be charged in court on Friday for theft, which carries a maximum jail term of three years, or fine, or both, if convicted.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio police division, Supt Lee Chin Ek, commended his officers for their thorough investigative work, diligence and perservance in tracking down the suspects.

He also urged members of the public to remove the ignition keys and lock their cars if they are left unattended, as well as remove cash cards and valuables and install an anti-theft alarm.
