Race down memory lane with HeritageFest

In 1998, he raced with former Ferrari supremo Michael Schumacher on the Italian company's private race track in Fiorano.

On July 27, Dr Ivor Thevathasan, 65, will be speeding on home ground.

He will join a fleet of almost 40 vintage and classic cars zooming past the Connaught Drive area.

The cars and the race are part of the line-up for Singapore HeritageFest 2008, a two-week festival organised by the National Heritage Board to celebrate Singapore's wealth of cultural activities.

Dr Ivor said: 'These cars are designed for sports. People will get an unforgettable experience from the sight (of the convoy), the sound of the engines roaring and the smell of petrol.'

Besides vintage pre-World War II Bentleys, the Malaysia and Singapore Vintage Car Register's president said classic Lotus Europas and Minis, worth over $100,000, will also be on display a day before the race.

The HeritageFest will be centred around the theme 'Who's Your Hero?' and famous personalities from various walks of life - including sprinter C. Kunalan, food guru Violet Oon and Cultural Medallion winners Joanna Wong, Som Said and Santha Bhaskar - will share their experiences with the public at various exhibitions and street performances.

Popular artistes like Atan from The Flybaits, Robert Fernando from local group Stardust and veteran singer Ling Xiao will helm concerts at different venues.

Mr Michael Koh, National Heritage Board's CEO, said they are 'expecting 1.6 million visitors this year', up from last year's 1.4 million.

To reach out to more people, the festival is venturing beyond the city area, to 'satellite hubs' such as Causeway Point and HDB Hub in Toa Payoh.
