The Land Transport Authority has awarded a $231.9 million contract for the Downtown Line 1 (DTL1) to Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company.

Shanghai Tunnel is a major civil engineering contractor from China, and has been involved in tunnelling work on Circle Line projects.

The company will design, construct and complete Promenade Station and tunnels associated with it. It will start work in the last quarter of this year and complete it in 2013.

The 600m long tunnels will be constructed using bored tunnelling method from a launching shaft adjacent to Rochor Flyover.

When completed, DTL1 will be a 4.3km fully underground rail transit system with six stations that will connect the East-West Line (EWL) Bugis station to the North-East Line (NEL) Chinatown station.

To facilitate the construction of the station, Temasek Avenue will be diverted in stages in accordance with the sequence of construction.
