Stolen CRVs recovered

AsiaOne
Aug 7, 2008

When five stolen Honda CRVs were returned to their owners yesterday afternoon, it was not relief they felt, but anger that their cars' anti-theft devices had failed to live up to expectations.

The Straits Times reported that the car owners immediately towed their vehicles to car agent Kah Motor to demand an explanation on how the cars could have been stolen.

Owners of the five stolen cars had parked their vehicles in HDB multi-storey carparks in areas such as Jurong and Kallang when the thefts happened. There were no forced signs of entry.

The same report also highlighted that owners believed the safety device in the $96,000 CRV had failed. The cars each have an engine immobiliser system that is supposed to prevent others from driving the cars away if they do not hold a key that is synchronised with the car.

However, the car owners claim that they have been able to unlock their cars with their house keys.

The Straits Times reported that Mr Vincent Ng, Kah Motor's product manager, was confident that such a scenario is not possible.
