M'sia: bus driver caught using handphone

IPOH, Malaysia: An express bus driver was held for using his handphone while driving and for illegally overtaking vehicles.

The 45-year-old man, who has a warrant of arrest out on him for a previous offence, was monitored by an undercover policeman on the bus from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Star.

Police flagged him down at the Ipoh Selatan toll plaza yesterday under the Ops Sikap XVII.

Highway operations coordinating officer Deputy Supt Ahmad Adnan Basri told reporters that the bus driver had eight previous offences, including exceeding the speed limit and operating in unauthorised areas.

"We are checking to see if the warrant of arrest is still valid," he said, adding that police issued him five summonses from yesterday's trip - three for using the handphone and two for overtaking illegally.

The driver was allowed to continue his journey with a warning to pay up all his outstanding summonses.

Ops Sikap XVII ends on Oct 8.
