Cabbies air grievances to top official on TV

BEIJING: Chongqing's top official yesterday held a rare televised meeting with disgruntled taxi drivers who staged violent strikes earlier this week.

For over three hours, representatives of cab drivers poured out their grievances over shrinking incomes and tough working conditions to Mr Bo Xilai, party secretary of China's fourth-largest city.

Taking turns to speak, they urged Mr Bo to resolve issues that had driven them to strike on Monday and Tuesday. Their grouses included high fees and operating costs, lack of government action to rein in unlicensed cabs, traffic jams and shortage of natural gas on which their cabs run.
