PETALING JAYA, Malaysia: Although the rear seat-belt ruling will take effect only on Jan 1, 2009, police checks at roadblocks show that an increasing number of rear seat passengers are already buckling up.

"Not many people are aware of the new rule and some were surprised when they were stopped by traffic policemen and advised to use the rear seat belt.

"However, as of today, we can easily see up to 70% of the passengers in the back using their seat belts," said state traffic and public order chief Supt Che Hussin Omar during a roadblock in Persiaran Datuk Menteri on Tuesday.

Some 15 traffic policemen from the Selangor police headquarters and Shah Alam took part in the operation, which lasted more than an hour and during which drivers were fined for various offences.

Supt Hussin said various campaigns, talks and seminars organised by the police and media had played a big role in creating awareness for the new ruling.

"Buckling up must not be considered a hassle but an important safety measure that can save lives during accidents," he said.
