Germany's Merkel - looking at guarantees for Opel

BERLIN, GERMANY - Chancellor Angela Merkel said she and Opel executives discussed on Monday the possibility of the German government providing the General Motors' unit with liquidity guarantees.

Merkel said she wanted a decision on whether such guarantees would be used by Christmas. If Opel used any such guarantee, the government would want the funds to stay in Germany, she added.

"We discussed a possible guarantee that would secure a medium term liqudity requirement. I believe that it's very important to see the time frame here," Merkel told a news conference in Berlin.
