Where art and superbikes meet

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: Iylia Afiat's sketches will make you want to pick up a superbike and take a trip into the unknown.

And there are some 30 of his drawings on display at Balai Seni NSTP, 31, Jalan Riong, Bangsar, most of which pay homage to his one true passion -- superbikes.

Iylia is attempting to promote his style in the local art scene through his first solo exhibition that started yesterday,

The 21-year-old started dabbling in art at the age of six, when his love for drawing and sketching was encouraged by his parents, who are both artists.

"When I was younger, I loved to sketch figures of Japanese cartoon characters. After that, my sketches expanded to anything that caught my interest," said the owner of three superbikes.

Preferring to use charcoal as his main medium, Iylia said using other medium and injecting colour into his drawings would not do justice to what he is trying to portray through his art.

"I want my drawings to show raw emotion, movements and speed. Colours would enhance the drawings, but it would not be the way I want to showcase my art."

Iylia said he chose superbikes as his main subject as he had always been fascinated by motocross competitions and the atmosphere at such events.

His drawings, which are exhibited daily from 10am to 6pm until Jan 30, are also for sale. Those interested can call him at 013-342-6711.

Admission to the exhibition is free.
