The hypermiler iQ

Hypermiling may not have caught on in Singapore yet but it is all the rage in the other side of the hemisphere.

Touted as one of the most fuel-efficient cars on the market, the Toyota iQ has broke official mpg figures in a recent hypermiling challenge.

Piloted by two of the team from the iQ blog, a standard iQ2 with a 1.0-litre VVT-i petrol engine, clocked roughly 800 kilometres on a 32-litre tank of fuel.

According to the blog, the hypermiling challenge wasn't a 'finely tuned marathon attempt.' Which means no planning and 'a couple of wasteful U-turns' thrown in.

Setting out from Brighton on Jan 25, the duo tagged 18 cities in two days on a route that ranged from the west (Cardiff) to the north (Wolverhampton).

Reportedly, there was pessimism about reaching the official target, given that the theoretical range from a full 32-litre tank in an iQ is about 743 kilometres.

But, Toyota boasted, 'in spite of wind, rain, congestion and the need to run the heater, headlight and wipers - all a drain on fuel consumption - the car managed 811.4 kilometres before endng its journey in central Oxford.

That works out to 3.29 litres per 100km, compared to an official combined cycle figure of 3.58 litres per 100km.
