A Lotus with four seats

By Tony Ng

One usually assumes that all sports cars are impractical and fuel-devouring machines, which is not wrong.

But a sports car just launched in Singapore this week may change that view altogether - the Lotus Evora.

This is the only production mid-engined 2+2 - that means you can carry two passengers at the rear. Also it's the first Lotus that's built from the ground up since the Elise made its debut around 13 year ago.

Practicality seems to be the mantra of the 280-horsepowered Evora.

Getting in and out of the car will require less athletic prowess with its wider, taller door apertures, narrower sills and higher seating positions.

And then there were back seats in sports cars.

Even though it is a fast car (0-100kph in 5.1secs), its fuel consumption is just 8.7 litres/100km.

But the Evora's sports car credentials are not neglected. It will have a bespoke engine capable of churning out 280bhp at 6,400rpm.

Equipment list includes a touchscreen multimedia system and electric power-fold door mirrors.

The Evora will be handcrafted and built on a dedicated new assembly line within Lotus' advanced manufacturing facility at Hethel in the east of England.

Lotus says production will be restricted to about 2,000 cars a year.

Mr Mark Fullalove, territory manager for Lotus, said, "The Lotus Evora is more of an everyday proposition than current platform vehicles."

According to Mr Fullalove, prices are expected to be in the region of $300,000.
