Fatal accident causes 3-hour jam

By Rachel Chan

AN ACCIDENT on the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) yesterday morning caused a massive traffic jam and a tailback of over 10km that stretched all the way to Tampines.

The accident between a taxi, a car and a motorcycle took place near the Bendemeer Road exit on the PIE, going towards Jurong.

Motorcyclist Soh Chio Chiew, 66, died on the spot from serious injuries.

When contacted yesterday, a police spokesman said they were informed of the accident shortly before 8.30am.

For many motorists, the resulting congestion stretched what would have been a 30-minute journey to work to one which lasted nearly two hours.

Many, like Mr Anthony Goh, 30, an operations manager, were late for work as a result.

"When I saw the bumper-to-bumper traffic, I knew there was an accident ahead, but there was just no way to get out of the jam. By the time I got to work, it was nearly lunch time," he said.

Another motorist, Mr Tan Seow Kwang, 57, an assistant at an air-freight company, said: "Normally, it would take me only 20 minutes from the Eunos exit on the expressway to get to Toa Payoh, but today it took me more than 90 minutes because of the jam."

The police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information should contact them on 1800-547-1818.
