BMW 1-series M unveiled in Singapore

Correction: The 1M coupe comes with two turbochargers and not superchargers as originally stated. Production also begins in March and Singapore deliveries start in May instead of May and July respectively.By Tony Ng

A pre-production model of the limited edition four-seater coupe BMW 1-series M (1M) was unveiled to the media last Friday.

The entry-level 1M car is an M extension of the BMW 1-series. M cars are BMW's top-of-the-line high performance cars.

20 of the estimated 2,000-plus units available worldwide have been allocated to Munich Automobiles, the agent for BMW M cars here.

It is understood that around seven units of the baby M car have already been booked by customers.

Underneath the aggresive metal - think M gills, flared wheel arches and a number of pseduo air vents - lies a 2,979cc direct injection engine with two turbochargers. Paired to it is a six-speed manual transmission.

The 1M produces 340-horsepower peaking at 5,900rpm. You will reach peak torque of 450Nm at 1,500rpm to 4,500rpm. An overboost function tips it to 500Nm.

With that much power, the coupe accelerates to 100kmh in 4.9 seconds, ensuring that you will run out of asphalt quickly. Claimed fuel consumption stands at 9.6 litres/100km.

The car measures 4,380mm by 1,803mm by 1,420mm. While it is the shortest and flattest model in the M model range, the 1M is 55mm wider than the 135i coupe.

The small, high-performance car will be "capable of everday use", BMW said in a statement. The 1M would also attract younger customers to the performance brand, it said.

Production begins in March and delivery of the first 1M for Singapore will start in May.

The 1M is estimated to cost around $280,000 with COE.
