SINGAPORE - HDB residents in Jurong West Street 52 were woken up in the wee hours of Thursday morning by thick smoke and loud explosions from the carpark below.

A car parked at Block 525 had caught fire, with flames engulfing the entire vehicle. An eyewitness, Lee, told citizen journalism website Stomp that a man was seen trying to put out the blaze with water, but to no avail.

Two loud explosions were heard, Lee said, and another vehicle parked nearby caught fire as well. The incident reportedly took place at around 5.30am.

A police car together with a fire engine and ambulance arrived at the scene some five minutes later, and the blaze was put out in under 15 minutes.

Thursday's incident was reminiscent of another car fire which took place some three months back at Block 355 Choa Chu Kang Central (pictures below).

Caught on video by a resident on the evening of Nov 13, the fiery vehicle was seen parked in between a row of unoccupied lots. Three loud explosions were heard during the incident.
