17 car models that will face up to $20k in carbon taxes

SINGAPORE - Is it time to buy a diesel car? Looking to take advantage of the new Carbon Emissions-based Vehicle Scheme (CEVS)?

Here is a list of vehicles, released by the Land Transport Authority, that will face carbon surcharges up to $20,000 after the CEVS kicks on on Jan 1, 2013.

According to the non-exhaustive list, the surcharges mostly affect cars of European makes such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Both the Audi A8 and the BMW 7-series limousine ranges face surcharges from $5,000 to $10,000.

Sportier models such as the Audi RS5 4.2L and the Porsche 911 Turbo 3.8L will see hefty taxes of $15,000.

If you're shopping for the Bentley Continental Flying Spur 6.0L or the Ferrari 458 Italia 4.5L, get ready for a $20,000 surcharge.

Compared to the rebates which will take effect on Jan 1, 2013, these surcharges will only kick in six months later so that consumers and the motor industry have time to get used to the scheme.

Check out these 17 car models below that will face carbon penalties and after the page break, another 18 models that will get carbon rebates. Which will you pick?
