Hyundai distributor to investigate taxi fires

SINGAPORE - Hyundai distributor Komoco Motors said it will investigate the recent two incidents where ComfortDelGro's Hyundai Sonata taxis burst into flames.

The Straits Times reported that a specialist team of technicians will be sent to all ComfortDelGro taxi service centres next week.

An engineer from Hyundai Motor Company's headquarters in Seoul will arrive in Singapore to assist the team.

This move comes just after a taxi, last serviced on March 26, burst into flames while travelling along the PIE yesterday.

At about 12.30pm, the driver noticed white smoke coming out of the bonnet and immediately drove to the road shoulder before getting out.

Flames shot out from the bonnet soon after.

This is the second time in three weeks a Sonata taxi has caught fire and, according to the Straits Times, ComfortDelGro is working closely with Komoco Motors to find out what had happened in both cases.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the incident at about 12.45pm. Officers managed to put out the fire within 10 minutes of their arrival.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
