Plastic surgeon Woffles Wu fined $1K for lying to police

Renowned plastic surgeon Woffles Wu Tze Liang was fined $1,000 after pleading guilty in a district court today for conspiring with an elderly employee to provide incorrect information to the police.

Wu got Mr Kuan Yit Wah to lie on two occasions to the police that he was the driver behind Wu's car when it was caught speeding in Nov 2006 and Sept 2005, reported The Straits Times.

On Sep 11, 2005, Wu got Mr Kuan, then 76, to tell police that he was the driver of a car speeding at 95kmh along Lornie Road.

The Straits Times said that Mr Kuan lied again about a speeding offence at 9.45am on Nov 10, 2006. The car was travelling at 91kmh on Adam Road. The speed limit in both instances was 70kmh and involved Wu's car.

Court papers did not state who the actual driver was and a notice was sent to Wu to reveal the identity of the driver.

Concerned that he would accumulate demerit points, Wu made Mr Kuan 'take the fall for him'. Mr Kuan was then a maintenance technician in his clinic and is now 83 years old. He has not been charged.

Senior Counsel Harry Elias asked the judge for leniency, stating that Wu had made numerous contributions to Singapore and the aesthetic surgery sector.

Wu operates an aesthetic surgery and laser centre at Camden Medical Centre in Orchard Boulevard, and is often quoted in newspapers on issues relating to plastic surgery.

Wu also opened the private Museum of Contemporary Chinese Art, also known as the Maosoleum, in Kaki Bukit Road in 2010.

He told The Straits Times today that he regrets his mistake and that "this episode has taught me to be more mindful of the law".
