SINGAPORE - Five people were injured in a crash at Chong Pang market in Yishun on Monday morning when a car ploughed through a pedestrian walkway.
The driver of a Mercedes-Benz reportedly lost control of his car while reversing at a car park at Block 102 Yishun Avenue 5.
He hit a Toyota Camry in the carpark, mounted the pavement before crashing into two stalls at the market.
Five passers-by, all of whom were in their fifties and sixties, were injured in the crash.
Three women and two men, suffering from head, limb and back injuries, were taken conscious to Khoo Teck Puat hospital, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
A spokesperson from Khoo Teck Puat Hospital said that three have been discharged while two have been warded for the injuries.
According to my paper on Tuesday, one of them was in a high-dependency ward in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit, while another was in a general ward.
Eye-witnesses told the paper that the driver, who was unhurt, may have been with his wife.
In an email to citizen journalism Stomp, a netizen who witness the incident said that a newspaper seller, a woman and another man were injured.
He added that some passers-by were frightened by the incident and that one woman was so shocked that she could not walk.
A video sent to citizen journalism website Stomp shows the car reversing at a fast speed as passers-by scrambled to get out of the way.
A man dressed in a white shirt and shorts can be seen reacting in shock as he spotted the reversing car. The man then tried to run out of the way and managed to escape impact by jumping over some objects next to a stall as the car whizzed past.
According to the Chinese evening papers, the 67-year-old driver of the Mercedes had recently suffered a stroke.
The police told AsiaOne that he is currently assisting in investigations.
